00:06:12 Colleen St.James: Hi Everyone - thank you Dr.Laura for being here and Candace for organizing. 00:06:23 Dr. Laura Markham: Welcome! We will begin in just a moment. If you’d like to be in the queue to ask a question, please raise your hand. 00:06:27 Heidi Garcia: I love your glasses, Candace! 00:06:30 Dr. Laura Markham: Thank you Colleen! 00:06:49 Candace Kielbiski: Thanks Heidi! 00:10:32 Colleen St.James: Lynn Lyons is amazing (I think Dr. Laura has recommended her to parents in the past). https://www.lynnlyons.com 00:14:56 Candace Kielbiski: Next three questions: 00:15:01 Candace Kielbiski: Jolita Isode 00:15:05 Candace Kielbiski: Heidi Garcia 00:15:19 Candace Kielbiski: Rafaela da Costa 00:19:26 Candace Kielbiski: https://tamarchansky.com/ 00:19:43 Marcella Neudert: Sorry for that! my daughter tapped on the phone and I didn‘t realize 00:22:45 NAOMI PEEK: Sorry what was the name of the clinician? 00:33:10 Dr. Laura Markham: Tamar Chansky and Lynn Lyons 00:45:21 Candace Kielbiski: Heidi, have they suggested an Orton Gillingham program for the Dyslexia? 00:50:13 Thea: Not sure if available in your area or your thing, but some schools do not start writing/reading until later (after kindergarten) and instead focus on play, fine motor skills to prep for that help with that, oral language development etc. This is the approach of Waldorf, and I think also Montessori follows a more student-led approach. O 00:50:22 Thea: I’m sure there are others 00:55:47 Heidi Garcia: Thea, yeah, I looked into some of those types of options but couldn't find anything that I felt would work for him. He doesn't like Montessori and I can't/won't get past the racist philosophy that underlies Waldorf (even recognizing that not all schools explicitly espouse it). 00:57:02 Heidi Garcia: Candace, the advice for reading was a bit different (at this point--could change in the future) but the writing program that she recommended (and that his school where he'll attend K uses) is based on it. 00:57:25 Heidi Garcia: All of the research I am familiar with definitely points to OG. 00:58:06 Candace Kielbiski: Fantastic! It was a game changer for my child. Dyslexia and ADHD often come paired. There is so much research into dyslexia now. 01:02:39 Thea: Totally get that Heidi! In our area there are also “open-classroom” schools, that I think can cater to combos of gifted/dyslexia etc. and forest schools. I hope that you are able to find a good fit and support system at home! <3 01:03:05 Heidi Garcia: I considered skipping K all together in favor of forest school :) 01:03:36 Heidi Garcia: But the one I wanted was way over subscribed. (Too many kids wanted to attend.) 01:03:59 Candace Kielbiski: I am in Canada~ we did forest school when my children were younger. My daughter still wishes she was there. 01:04:05 Thea: YES!!! Wish we could do that here as well :) 01:04:22 Heidi Garcia: His K is indoors, but located in a public park which I think will be a pretty good fit for him. 01:05:24 Heidi Garcia: His teacher is supposed to be really good at connecting with kids, whereas his preschool teacher was not. (Which I think is a big part of how we ended up where we did this year.) 01:06:05 Heidi Garcia: Aren't you in Vancouver, Candace? We are practically neighbors! 01:08:22 Candace Kielbiski: Chiara 01:08:25 Candace Kielbiski: Naomi 01:09:02 Candace Kielbiski: OK Restart~ next three questions: 01:09:06 Candace Kielbiski: Chiara 01:09:09 Candace Kielbiski: Filyet 01:09:28 Candace Kielbiski: Marcella 01:11:06 Heidi Garcia: I have to go to relieve my husband.
